Pterygium

A pterygium is a superficial fleshy growth usually in the inner corner of the eye. It can cause chronic irritation and redness, and if left untreated it encroaches on the cornea, eventually leading to visual loss. We at the Vision Institute recommend that these fleshy growths are removed surgically. We use the latest techniques, including conjunctival grafting and if required a special medication (mitomycin C) to prevent the growth from coming back – which occurs in approximately 8 – 18% of people who have this operation. You are then required to use drops for a few weeks after the operation.
