Iritis is a common eye problem. It refers to inflammation of the anterior part of the eye (also referred to as Anterior Uveitis).

Iritis usually causes redness of the white of the eye, dull pain, sensitivity to light and eventually blurring of vision. It can occur in one or both eyes, and in approximately 50% of cases it is associated with an underlying systemic condition.

The treatment usually consists of steroid drops and drops to dilate the pupil, for a few weeks. Regular checks are required to ensure adequate response to the treatment and management of possible complications. It is a condition that has a tendency to recur from time to time.

Prompt treatment will usually cause complete resolution of the problem, but if left untreated, the disease can lead to irreversible blindness.

That is why we recommend you get a prompt check up from an Ophthalmologist if you notice any problems with your eyes, particularly if you have had iritis in the past.
