Dry Eyes

What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the quality of the tears is poor and does not sufficiently wet the eyes.

Symptoms of dry eye syndrome

The problem often affects both eyes and includes:
  • Irritated eyes that feel dry, gritty and uncomfortable
  • The white of the eyes and the eyelid margin is red
  • The eyelids stick together when you wake up in the morning

What is the treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome?

There are many drops available to try and help the symptoms of dry eyes, which your doctor can advise you on.
In patients that have very dry eyes sometimes the doctor will advise placing a small plug into the drainage system of the eyelids so that the tears are unable to drain away and have a longer wetting effect in the eye.
